    <title>GreeningDetroit.com Attends Manufacturing in America</title>
    <link>http://www.empvisualsolutions.com/News/ID/97/GreeningDetroitcom-Attends-Manufacturing-in-America</link>
    <description>Manufacturing Symposium Gets Its Mojo in Motown
Just over three years ago, automobile manufacturing in the United States was at a crossroads.&amp;#160; Both General Motors and Chrysler were in bankruptcy and many politicians in Washington, Wall Street executives and business people from around the country were openly hostile to the industry in its “Hour of Darkness.”
But for the resolve of the executive branch of our Government to step in and throw the industry a lifeline, the national landscape of this industry would be vastly different and possibly non-existent today.&amp;#160;
Fast forward to 2013 and this two day conference.&amp;#160; My how the environment surrounding the national automobile industry has changed!&amp;#160; The problems today are much different than just a few short years ago.&amp;#160; Today, the focus is on finding the human resources talent for the industry, meeting demand with sufficient supply and otherwise controlling the increasing pressure the industry is under from pent up demand in North America and emerging markets globally.&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;
Manufacturing in America Symposium, sponsored by Siemens and Electro-Matic Products, Inc., is all about community, collaboration and innovation.&amp;#160; The two-day automotive manufacturing summit is stacked with more than 40 seminars, presentations, an exhibitor floor with over 30 exhibitors and a special presentation by Governor Rick Snyder on Wednesday.&amp;#160; With the intent to broaden the understanding of the latest emerging automation controls, drive and other technologies within this evolving industry amongst manufacturing innovators and key executives, this conference will afford the industry an opportunity as a whole to compete more effectively on a global basis.&amp;#160; Furthermore, having the conference at Ford Field creates a more exciting venue in which to create the necessary synergies to make this conference a success.&amp;#160;&amp;#160;
Having attended the “Automobile Manufacturing Summit” seminar on Wednesday morning at the renowned Gem Theatre, auto supplier executives were there in force to learn about the ins and outs of selling on a global scale.&amp;#160;&amp;#160; Guy Morgan, from BBK, took time to explain the distinction between an international company and a global company.&amp;#160; While an international company has divisions working and selling across the globe, it is not integrated globally like a global company.&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; The goal of any company doing business globally is to act as one company on a global scale, with one overall business purpose acting as one unit but in different locations across the globe. Certainly easier said than done.&amp;#160;
Another presentation focused on cyber security trends for industrial automation control systems.&amp;#160; Hacking and cyber security is one of the most serious issues facing large industrial companies conducting business globally.&amp;#160; Creating awareness, education and security are critical components to building multiple layers of security and defense.&amp;#160; Most important to realize is that no security system is fail safe in today’s’ world. &amp;#160;&amp;#160;Industrial spies, nation states and criminal enterprises are increasingly becoming more sophisticated in cracking corporations’ IT security and stealing sensitive secrets.&amp;#160; It’s important for global companies to maintain their security edge and keep the “bad guys at bay.”&amp;#160;
While only so much can be covered in a two day conference, the 2013 Manufacturing in America Symposium presented by Elecro-Matic Products and Siemens went a long way in keeping attendees on the cutting edge of advances in the automobile and controlled systems industry.&amp;#160; Future conferences will be put to the test to top this seminal event at Ford Field.

    <title>Electro-Matic Products Thrives: Featured in local Observer &amp; Eccentric</title>
    <link>http://www.empvisualsolutions.com/News/ID/95/Electro-Matic-Products-Thrives-Featured-in-local-Observer-Eccentric</link>
    <description>&amp;#160;Electro-Matic Products Inc. has been in business in Farmington Hills since 1969. That longevity isn't due to staying the same, but rather to changing with the demands of the market.
When discussing the success of the company he has been with for nearly 30 years, David Scaglione, vice president of sales and marketing, likes to reference Charles Darwin.
“It's not the strongest of the species or the most intelligent of the species that survives, it's that species that is most willing to change,” Scaglione said. “As we see technology trends evolving we changed our product lines to go after those trends.”
Until eight years ago, Scaglione worked in the Brecksville, OH, office. In his time with the company it has had to undergo many changes, like in the late 1980s when General Motors decided it would no longer be using hydraulic robots, which Electro-Matic had been selling.
Scaglione said Electro-Matic leadership recognized that the electric robots that would be used in place of the hydraulic ones would need harnesses and cables, so the company went into the robot harness business.
Transforming
In 2007, Electro-Matic, which employs about 160 people, began a new transformation. It started participation in the Employee Stock Ownership Plan, in which shares of the company can be purchased from the current owners and held in a trust. The employees of the company are the beneficiaries of that trust.
At the end of September 2012, Electro-Matic became a wholly employee-owned company. Scaglione said he thinks the former owners of the company, Ray Persia, Tom Moore and Jim Baker, built in the entrepreneurial spirit, and being employee-owned will lead to even more innovation and adaptation in the future.
“Every employee now has a vested interest in seeing the company succeed and grow,” he said. “They're no longer just an employee, they are an owner, they have a vested interested in this. And that sense of ownership creates a tremendous amount of pride.”
Today, Electro-Matic has three business units: distribution, industrial cable and connector assembly and special products.
Siemens AG, an international company based in Germany, is the largest manufacturer for which Electro-Matic distributes, specifically Siemens Energy and Automation, Inc. It also distributes for manufacturers such as Rittal and Turck.
Its industrial cable and connector assembly products are sold through the brand name EMP Connectivity.
The special products business includes Electro-Matic's LED lighting technology. The technology is used on message boards inside factories as well as outside schools, businesses and on billboards. Scaglione said this line of business is ever-expanding as LED technology becomes more popular to use for lighting and other purposes.

With Siemens, Electro-Matic will host the Manufacturing in America Symposium at Ford Field on March 20 and 21. The symposium is free to attend and registration can be done online at usa.siemens.com/techtipoff

    <description>Employee-owned Electro-Matic clicking on all servos
Industrial automation distributor completes ESOP, poised for growth
&amp;#160;
FARMINGTON HILLS, MI—Recent history has shown that, while recessions can be broad and deep, recoveries don’t happen all at once. Certain sectors of the economy fare better than others, and some companies survive tough times only to emerge in an even better competitive position. How do they do it?&amp;#160;
&amp;#160;
One way is to get better at what you do. Regardless of economic conditions, customers respond to suppliers that offer new ideas, better systems or expanded capabilities. &amp;#160;
&amp;#160;
Lately, one Detroit area company has managed to do all three, and there may be one good reason why. Five years ago, the owners of Electro-Matic Products Inc, a Farmington-Hills industrial automation firm, announced the formation of an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), in which shares of the company are purchased from the current owners and held in trust, with employees as the beneficiaries of that trust. For Electro-Matic, the purchase period recently ended, and on September 29, 2012 the company was officially one-hundred percent employee-owned. &amp;#160;That day, president and CEO, Jim Baker, told employees: “From this point on, it is up to all of us, each and every day, to grow and improve the products and services we deliver to our customers.”&amp;#160;
&amp;#160;
Employee ownership—key to stability and growth
&amp;#160;
Electro-Matic, with around 160 employees and over $100 million in sales, joins a growing list of companies that utilize some form of employee stock ownership as a means of rewarding companywide performance and providing retirement benefits. Back in 2007, Electro-Matic owners Ray Persia, Tom Moore and Jim Baker also felt that an ESOP was an appropriate succession plan. What better way to insure the long-term future of the company than to place it squarely in the hands of those responsible for over 40 years of success?
&amp;#160;
Proponents of ESOP claim there is no greater path to long term growth and financial stability than employee ownership. They may be right. According to the National Center for Employee Ownership, independent research from at least three different university studies indicates corporations that are employee-owned grew well over 2 percent more per year on average than those that are publicly or privately owned. What’s more, when combined with participative management practices, which is often the case with ESOP companies, the growth differential increased to around 10 percent per year! Electro-Matic does not publicize sales data, but company officials confirm double-digit average annual growth since the ESOP inception.&amp;#160;
&amp;#160;
A technology company from the start
&amp;#160;
Like many distributors that grew up in this part of the world, Electro-Matic cut its teeth on the U. S. automotive industry. Unlike most of them, Electro-Matic was a technology company from the start, founded in 1969 to usher in the first wave of manufacturing automation with solid state proximity sensors, quick disconnect cord sets and other high tech (for the time) components that helped increase productivity on production lines. As welding, forming and assembly stations grew more complex and control-driven, Electro-Matic engineers pioneered the design and manufacture of connector cable assemblies that drastically reduced the time it took to install and startup assembly lines. Later, as both machines and operators grew to depend more on data input and communication, Electro-Matic was there, perfecting the control and display interface that enabled production and supply chain, diagnostic, and machine fault information to flow directly to the manufacturing floor in real time. These products and solutions helped enable revolutionary Just-In-Time manufacturing processes in the 1990s. Over the past fifteen years, Electro-Matic has also diversified into commercial LED applications, leveraging its experience in industrial controls and LED packaging to develop its own electronic message centers, digital billboards and indoor and outdoor area lighting products.&amp;#160;
&amp;#160;
Today, Electro-Matic is organized appropriately into three groups: Automation, Connectivity and Visual Products. Automation is essentially the distributor business, representing key automation component manufacturers, including such global industrial technology giants as Siemens. The Connectivity Group produces servo motor power and drive cable assemblies, along with customized cable carrier solutions and services. Both Connectivity and Visual Products manufacture and market their own branded products.
&amp;#160;
‘Entrepreneurial feel’ drives value innovation
&amp;#160;
According to company president Jim Baker, the key to being nimble in the mature manufacturing and assembly market is the creativity and motivation of Electro-Matic employees.&amp;#160;
&amp;#160;
“With the ESOP, everyone here knows very well how to create value for themselves. And that’s by creating value for the company, whether it’s maximizing cash flow or doing whatever it takes to make a customer happy,” says Baker. “This company has always had an entrepreneurial feel to it… we were always trying different things, working with new technologies, and being rewarded for the results of our efforts. &amp;#160;Now every employee knows that feeling. And it’s become a powerful force for growing the business and delivering value to the customer every day.”&amp;#160;
&amp;#160;
This helps explain how a highly regarded distributor of industrial automation components and technology got into LED displays and LED lighting in the first place. The company saw a way to improve industrial ‘display boards’ by using flexible LED messaging to communicate production line information in real time. From there, it was a quick move to develop programmable LED message centers for commercial and retail customers.&amp;#160;
&amp;#160;
“What you typically hear about ‘innovation’ is how new and different something is,” says vice president of sales and marketing, Dave Scaglione. “To be worth anything, it also has to be better. And that usually involves the additional step of turning it into something that saves money, time, energy or space.” Scaglione also points out that all of their Automation and Connectivity customers have buildings and parking lots that need to be lit, and that means a ready market for LED Lighting products.
&amp;#160;
Electro-Matic co-hosts “Manufacturing in America” tech event
&amp;#160;
A motivated workforce with a pipeline full of innovation and a reputation for quality and integrity. It’s the sort of thing customers like to hear. And what better place to learn more about it than at the annual Electro-Matic Technology Tip-Off event, entitled “Manufacturing in America,” at Ford Field on March 20-21, presented by Electro-Matic and Siemens. Over one thousand executives, technology leaders and innovators in the manufacturing industry will be in attendance for two days of demonstrations, seminars and vendor displays.&amp;#160;

    <description>Electro-Matic Products Hyperion Plus Electronic Message&amp;#160;Centers, allow poignant messages, graphics and videos to be&amp;#160;tailored to specific markets and customers with little to no&amp;#160;effort as clearly seen in one of our newest and biggest displays&amp;#160;now standing over&amp;#160;the world famous Brat Stop!
&amp;#160;“We are excited to add the famous Kenosha, Wisconsin-based
Brat Stop to our growing list of Electro-Matic Products,
Hyperion Plus installations. Many thanks go out to Wayne
Palmer and Prodigy Lighting &amp;amp; Sign for doing a wonderful job
with this project.”
~James Baker, Regional Sales Manager, Visual Products.&amp;#160;Electro-Matic Products, Inc.
&amp;#160;
The Brat Stop opened in 1961 and is located just five minutes
over the Wisconsin/Illinois border. It is known as the unofficial
“Gateway to Wisconsin” and services over 450,000 visitors per
year.
&amp;#160;
Electro-Matic Products, Inc. Hyperion Plus sign was one of the largest that has been built in the Electro-Matic Products facility
to-date. The process of assembling and testing the sign took only a few days.
&amp;#160;
The graphics, video and messaging was tailored by Electro-Matic’s top of the line, easy to use software for the Brat Stop’s
establishment; promoting drink specials and upcoming events.
&amp;#160;
&amp;#160; &amp;#160; &amp;#160;&amp;#160; &amp;#160; &amp;#160;
After the assembling and 100% testing process, the display was then delivered to Wisconsin from Electro-Matic Products
headquarters in Farmington Hills, MI and installed by Prodigy Lighting &amp;amp; Sign.
&amp;#160;
Wayne Palmer, owner of Prodigy Lighting and sign was impressed with the Hyperion Plus and the ease of installation:
“The day of
install and inspection went great, we were happy with the installation and when we turned the sign on, it did exactly what it was
supposed to do on the first try, the design and layout was, and still is, exceptional”.
&amp;#160;
The allure to the Brat Stop is now not only the Bratwurst, Cheese Mart, sports, political and entertainment personalities, but now
their Hyperion Plus Electronic Message Center.

    <description>Dooleys, of Roseville Michigan, is not only the place to go for great food &amp;amp; exceptional service, they are now even more visible to all commuters as they travel up and down Gratiot Avenue. With Dooleys new, eye-catching, energy-efficient Hyperion Plus Digital sign, they have not only added to their visual appeal, but now are able to instantaneously grab their customer’s attention by advertising specials and events with a touch of a button! We even have proof of the impact from the day of installation:
&amp;#160;
“When programming the sign for Dooleys, we posted an advertisement for their DJ from 9pm-2pm. Numerous customers immediately noticed the error questioning the hours of the DJ, which was supposed to read: 9pm to 2am. This just proves how many people were noticing the new sign.”-Timothy Muller, President/Owner Curb Appeal Conceptsw, Inc.
&amp;#160;
Here at Electro-Matic Products, Inc, we are always excited to install within our own community, and after speaking with Dooleys owner, Frank Sgroi, we are pleased to hear he feels the same way:
&amp;#160;
“You guys are local, been in business forty-something years, and you have a 24-hour full tech support staff and that’s important! All of the other guys are here today, gone tomorrow.”-Frank Sgroi, Owner of Dooleys
